We were faced with the most disturbing incident when one of our own Attorney Khotso Nthontho was arrested by police in his office for allegations of perjury.   Attorney Khotso Nthontho was arrested and detained at the Airfield Police Station.   It was then upon such an arrest that lawyers were forced to approach the courts on urgent basis for his release and indeed the court granted the order as prayed.  It was later on discovered that Attorney Khotso Nthontho’s home was vandalized by unknown persons wherein there was damage to his property.   We then realized that these are acts perpetrated to intimidate and threaten lawyers when doing their work.

Attorney Khotso  Nthontho has committed himself to representing detained soldiers suspected of mutiny and we are all aware that the other lawyers who have represented some of those soldiers were also intimidated, leading them to either fleeing the country in an attempt to save their lives.   Lawyers are constantly threatened with being on a hit list and we stand firm that such acts of intimidation are not only unlawful but they border on criminality.   Attorney Khotso Nthontho was later on charged with perjury in the Magistrate’s Court.

We call upon the Prime Minister and all his Ministers responsible for Safety and Security in our country to ensure that these acts of intimidation against lawyers stop with immediate effect, the rule of law and the administration of justice relies on the active participation by lawyers in representing their clients.

The Intimidation on Lawyers when they are fighting for justice must stop with immediate effect. We as the Law Society will stand firm and condemn all acts of intimidation against lawyers and urge the Police to investigate the case of Attorney Nthontho pertaining to the attack on his house and bring those criminals to book.

We call upon the all civil society advocating for justice, human rights and equal treatment to all to join hands with the Law Society and fight this disturbing practice that is now becoming an order of the day.
